Plagues, Pandemics, and Lessons from Literature: ‘To see with differing Eyes, than those which we look’d on Things with before’

March 18, 2021 -
7:00pm to 8:00pm

Brian Volck, MD, MFA
Physician and poet, formerly Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

Abstract:  In this year when we've lost family, friends, and cultural icons—and a year in which the vulnerable and marginalized have, predictably, suffered the most—we have a lot of reckoning to do. Physician and poet Brian Volck will consider literary accounts of infectious disease outbreaks throughout history and examine the mythologies of technological control. He’ll also discuss what the arts and humanities have to teach us going forward.
