Abstract: This talk will introduce attendees to the principles and practices of trauma informed care and explain why they are relevant to ethics consultation. Ethical dilemmas in healthcare, as well as situations causing moral distress, can be sources of trauma for patients, families, and clinical team members. Starting from the awareness that trauma is pervasive, trauma informed care provides foundational principles upon which to respond to trauma and minimize retraumatization. This presentation describes trauma informed ethics consultation, how it ideally integrates trauma informed care into ethics consultation practices, and future potential developments to achieve the goals of trauma informed care.
