Seizing Hope is the culmination of a multi-year neuroethics project conducted by research institute Neuroethics Canada. The documentary explores ethical issues associated with using neurotechnologies like deep brain stimulation. It interviews four families of children with pediatric drug resistant epilepsy (DRE), seeking to discuss the broader, and more personal, implications of different decision-making processes regarding this disorder. Though surgery is a known option for pediatric DRE, the film considers other procedures made possible by advancing technologies. Seizing Hope seeks to encourage a balanced discussion – one which recognizes both humanistic and clinical perspectives – about pediatric DRE and its treatment options.
