“Madmen” in Victorian Britain and The Boundaries of Victorian Masculinity

Abstract: The fear of madness looms large in Victorian literature and medicine, offering images and narratives that influence our own discussions of mental illness, self-control, and the performance of identity. In her most recent book, Out of His Mind: Masculinity and Mental Health in Victorian Britain, Amy Milne-Smith probes below the stereotypes and misconceptions around madness in the Victorian era to highlight the personal experiences of men's insanity, the public meaning placed on their conditions, and influence the intertwined histories of psychiatry, gender, and power have on research today.
