2:00pm to 3:00pm

Abstract:  Every day of the week, environmental service workers enter hospital patients’ rooms to clean. In this short documentary, eight housekeepers at Duke Hospital talk about their relationships with patients and the ways in which they believe their work and empathy contributes to healing.

Neil Prose is Professor of Pediatrics and Dermatology at Duke University and Research Professor at the Duke Global Health Institute. His academic interests are provider-patient communication and global health. As the pandemic has forced hospitals to restrict visitors and clergy, the work of housekeepers in providing emotional support to patients and their families has become more important than ever. Read the CNN story about the lifesaving compassion shown by Rosaura Quinteros, a hospital housekeeper in Orlando, towards a patient with COVID, featuring commentary by Neil Prose.
