Abstract: Dr. Cesarano and Dr. Lyashevsky currently teach cognitive science at Columbia University. They have worked in the neuroscience biotechnology industry, as well as in the film industry. Through digital storytelling, their work brings together the arts and sciences for an effective delivery of emotion science knowledge. In 2018, they co-founded Affectifi, a benefit corporation with the mission of improving emotional literacy among adolescents, young adults, and educators. Affectifi has received seed funding from the National Science Foundation as a Small Business Innovation Research winner. In their introductory lecture, Dr. Cesarano and Dr. Lyashevsky talk about their Deep Emotion Learning (DEL) methodology and how their research in cognitive science has informed their journey in the tech industry. They will provide a demonstration of Affectifi’s ThinkHuman.tv platform using “Grey’s Anatomy” to present the extension that can be employed on Netflix to learn more about storytelling and the display of emotions in different cultural contexts.
