WEBINAR: Ethical and Practical Challenges Associated with Clinical Use of Genetic Testing and Genomic Sequencing

April 12, 2018 -
11:00am to 12:00pm

Registration Required:  Contact Jody Stockdill (jody.stockdill@pitt.edu) to register

Objectives:  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify central ethical issues and practical challenges associated with the clinical use of genetic testing and genomic sequencing.
  2. Articulate basic ethical principles and normative frameworks for resolving ethical and practical challenges in the use of genetic testing and genomic sequencing in clinical settings.
  3. Anticipate additional ethical problems that might arise in the clinical use of new genomic technologies.

Overview:  The increasing use of genetic testing and genomic technologies in clinical contexts raises a number of ethical questions and practical challenges for clinicians. During this webinar presentation, Dr. Deem will present an overview of the main ethical issues and practical challenges that arise from the use of genetic testing and genomic technologies in clinical contexts. Among the Issues that will be discussed are: the challenges that the complexity of genetic information presents for acquiring informed consent for testing, patient privacy and confidentiality when results have implications for members of the patient’s family, genetic testing for children, communication and genetic literacy among the general public and clinicians, and the potential impact of genetic results on patient candidacy for future medical interventions.
