Abstract: Equity Design Thinking (EDT) is an approach to design that promotes design justice, a principle concerned with how the design of technologies influences the distribution of risks, harms, and benefits among various groups of people. EDT involves marginalized communities as co-creators of health technologies to overcome the power differentials that lead to exclusion, oppression, and health disparities among vulnerable groups. EDT goes beyond conventional well-meaning approaches for creating good design, such as human-centered design and design-thinking, because it connects design to larger struggles for collective liberation and ecological survival that seek to avoid reproducing or perpetuating structural inequalities.
