Contingent Matter: Bodies, Medicine, and Care in the Early Modern Francophone World

October 12, 2022 -
5:00pm to 6:30pm

Tracy Rutler, PhD
Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies and
Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
Penn State University

In this presentation, Dr. Rutler will call into question the construction of a notion of “normative” ability in early modern France, by turning to communities outside of labs and surgery rooms. By analyzing how individuals engaged in care roles such as nuns and midwives engaged with bodies, she will show how we might imagine a new ontology of dis/ability.

Health Humanities Lecture Series of the Center for Bioethics & Health Law — This lecture is offered in conjunction with Ailing Bodies, taught by Kaliane Ung, and in celebration of the new undergraduate Certificate in Health Humanities.
